For the JW converts- What drew you in?

wannabfree's thread about being ashamed of being suckered in to the big lie got me to thinking.

i wish my grandma was still alive so i could ask her what it was that attracted her to the jws.

she was raised methodist- our family still has a small church in her birthplace, got a degree back when it was rare for black people to do so.

I went to 12 yrs catholic school but as soon as i graduated I said thats not right but I wanted to know what the truth was about the meaning of life. My next move was in college the 60's campus radical then edgar cayce group drifted from that joined a commune but that wasn't it back to meditation group moved played around still pondering was now in my 30's still single. witnesses came to my door life forever on earth , resurrection sounded interesting started studying no intention of joining met a man at workwho was also a searcher for answers told him about jw's we ended up married became witnesses got really involved we were always sort of unusual & talked alot to each other started having some questions did more research people got suspicious of us and we walked out together. now kind of agnostic & still don't know the meaning of life.

I'm glad my children don't have to grow up being afraid of cupcakes

yesterday, i brought a batch of cupcakes to my son's school.

in passing them out, i started to give one to one of the children, who was a jw.

he immediately started freaking out and screaming "no thank you" over and over.

these posts have been very enlightening to me because I was not raised a witness I became one when I was 36 & had no previous jw contact & have no children. I wasn't paying attention to the kids in the congregation so I was oblivious to their distress.

the only thing I remember was after a book study a couple was having their anniversary so I brought a cake to celebrate & I had their names put on the cake they were raised in's so she looked at the cake for awhile & said she had never seen a cake with her name on it & it kind of freaked her out a little & I said whats the problem theres nothing wrong with it but it made her uncomfortable.

I see now how damaging that can be.

Why not make a true religion?

with everthing ive read here it seems like eeveryone has the attitude that they cant fix the wts.

why havent you all joined together and made a declaration of independence?

why not fix it and make a true religion of peace and jesus' message?

It's not our game its the creators problem. apparently its not important for us to have the correct view because the creator has the ability to let us know but chooses not to and leaves us scrambling around trying to come up with something.

it's not the truth. I believe in intelligent design but what i want to know is who thought this was a good idea? who is the creator, why create? Whats the reason for the big mystery? What are we and do we continue? The wtbs created a little world view but its a lie and their attempts to keep it going have turned into a diasterous enclosure.

a few years back, before i had any doubts and when i was a hardcore jw, i remember a super-pioneer-jw sister was conversing with me.

i made the comment about some of my friends at work (all non-witnesses).

she stops me mid sentence and says "friends?

september will mark my first year out of the watch towers darkness (pun intended).

i embarked on my full blown search for truth about the truth in april 2009, and by september of that same year i was convinced the organization was no different than any other religion; but i was wrong again.

because if there were like any other christian denomination, such as the baptists, methodists, presbyterians, lutherans, etc...it would have been a lot easier to endure sitting in their meetings, listening to their rhetoric, and engaging in some of their activities.

We became witnesses together and we left together & we have no witnesses relatives & no children so for us its easiar to walk. However, it was still problematic leaving everyone you've known for the past 25 yrs. because of not being raised with it alot got by me & for some reason I thought it was ok to disagree mentally but of course I realized that wasn't going to work.

as time goes by you realize just how dangerous this really is on so many levels. reading about the dc this year, was so disturbing & I feel your pain you who have family entrapped. they are busy destroying these ties in their desire & their fear. it is difficult to know what to do we can hope that the org will become so paranoid & insane that their actions will betray them to even the heaviest koolaid drinker.
